This week I'm in A Coruña, Galicia, attending the @webengineshackfest.org 👩💻 where we are discussing the future of web engines and standards. Given the potential impact on future web development, I thought it would be helpful to share some of my personal notes from the event. ✍️👇
Post
⏱️ Day 0 👉 After hours of hiking in the beautiful Galician forest, we finally arrived in A Coruña. 🥾🌲 👋 Holis @jonkuperman.com and @danielroe.dev
⏱️ Day 1 👉 Valerie Young gave a talk about Web Platform Tests (WPT). These are test suites for Web platform specifications written in HTML but initially lacked complete accessibility support. 👉 She found a way to solve this by writing new tests in Python. Example github.com/web-platform...
👉 HarfBuzz is an open-source text shaping engine. 👉 Behdad Esfahbod gave a very cool demo using HarfBuzz (harfbuzz.github.io/hb-gpu-demo/) to compare WebGL and WebGPU for shaping and rasterisation in 3D within a browser.
👉 Eemeli Aro discussed a HTML proposal for localising websites without relying on custom solutions. github.com/mozilla/expl... 👉 Developers could bind elements to localised messages provided by a localisation resource. 👉 This HTML proposal complements the TC39 Proposal for Intl.MessageFormat in JS.
👉 @danielroe.dev and @patak.cat gave a fantastic talk about the @npmx.dev project. They talked about how it started, its history, community and engineering culture around it. 👉 e18e.dev is a project aimed at unite individuals to enhancing the JS ecosystem's performance.
👉 atproto.com exists to decentralize social media by decoupling user data and identity from the applications built on top of them. 👉 Atmosphere are the web of apps that store and access data using the atproto 👉 Great explanation of npmx's role in the Atmosphere: docs.npmx.dev/integrations...
⏱️ Day 2 👉 We discussed date formatting without JS: 🤔 Where to implement the solution? ShadowDOM using the `<time>` element or CSS with the content property or both? 🤔 What is the scope? should we render absolute or relative time? 🤔 Accessibility? text selection? ✍️ Notes: hackmd.io/IJgF2r1DSuyZ...

⏱️ Day 2 (after the talks) We practised our monkey skills in a local climbing wall in A Coruña (amimontanismo.es/)) 💯🐒 @danielroe.dev showed us his superpowers 🧗♀️
⏱️ Day 3 👉 We discussed how can browsers can help to improve web accessibility 🤔 Ideas: user preferences for autoplay and contrast, keyboard nav for tooltips... 🤔 @danielroe.dev suggested browsers to share information with framework developer tools to help identify accessibility vulnerabilities ➕
