Gregg gets it correct here. “New OMB grant rule” sounds nerdy. But this is a huge and insane plan. This is the Trump admin writing down their goal of fundamentally changing the relationship between government and society. Funding for everything will be taken over. 1/

My latest for @thenation.com. Russell Vought is on a mission. He wants to take over all federal grant making & re-make it in his image. He is a dangerous ideologue who wants to inflict trauma on the whole nation. He is cruel and he has a plan. Only we can stop him. www.thenation.com/article/poli...

Worse, it is the culmination of fifty years of conservative schemes— building institutions like AFP and Heritage, taking over the Supreme Court, injecting big money in politics, rolling back law enforcement… And now, at last, exerting supreme political control over the entire US government budget.

*entire discretionary budget is fair to say, I think, between the Roberts Court and Trump admin theories of removal/agency control, impoundment, and now control over funding.

It’s aimed at rolling back the New Deal AND Reconstruction. I just don’t have words for how massive this is. Now is not the time for small ideas. We have become used to outrageous things but sustain your outrage for this. It is about our lives and our families and kids. Let’s stand up.

We all would've seen Trump coming better if we'd fully understood the insane grievances of the American right, like the New Deal, passing Civil Rights, holding Nixon accountable for breaking the law, and not letting Robert Bork be on the Supreme Court. Imagine being animated by these things.
