The Battle over the Constitution Has Spread to American Science. I'm out in the @theatlantic.com today about the new OMB proposed rule. It's just the longtime agenda of the the Supreme Court. US science and cancer cures now all depend on us picking up a fight with the Roberts Court.

theatlantic.comThe Unitary Executive Takes Over New TerritoryThe Trump administration’s theory of how the federal government should work is a threat to American science.

We can hope that after the midterms there will be a public transparent oversight process that turns this report into a series of high-profile hearings. Much of the public now gets news via video; Congress can use oversight to make compelling video so the country pays attention.

NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

And having a major public oversight process is important for science because there are many attacks on cancer cures that we need accountability for if we want to rebuild. Public and transparent oversight is needed to chart a new future for US science

The Trump Administration's below-the-radar gutting of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is truly flabbergasting -- and is the kind of thing that will lead to avoidable illness and death down the line, even if we won't be able to trace it discretely. www.washingtonsun.com/health/insid...

Everyone should read these threads I did about industry lobbyists and the EPA and understand them. Take the time to see the unambiguous evidence of what's happening now at this moment inside the EPA. Please retweet them. Please read them. Each one of the threads. It's happening in slow motion.

Also true for US civil servants as well. They are asked to be nonpartisan, but also take an oath to the Constitution (that is, to liberal democracy). The bounds of a nonpartisan civil service should encompass any political leadership that respects democracy.

Stan Oklobdzija@stano.bsky.social

If we can solve our disagreements within the bounds of liberal democratic governance, then you're my ally in the fight against authoritarianism both in America and overseas.

When civil servants oppose the Trump administration for rejecting the constitution, that is what we should expect; the challenge is explaining how that intersects today’s party alignment. It’s not fair to civil servants to expect them to remain neutral in the face of fascism.

Wait wait! In addition to all this: Real Clear isn’t some spontaneous thing, it’s a rightwing site funded by the same far-right billionaires - Koch, Uihlein, Bradley, etc - that want to tear down the govt, incl to destroy US cancer research. Real Clear is part of the Project 2025 effort.

A few mos ago I was at a talk by Jay Bhattacharya and I asked him how rightwing media affects trust in science. He said we just have to accept the media we have. That’s justifying him going on Fox and RealClear as much as he can. But that’s not right. We can talk about the media. I am. He should.

The second the rightwing billionaire world found it useful for their agenda of making more money, they went to war against biomedical research and saving lives from COVID and Tony Fauci and NIH. Billionaires boosted careerists willing to tell lies in service of that agenda-like Trump’s NIH director.

Restoring constitutional democracy after we fix the Supreme Court should entail invalidating Trump’s entire term because the 14th Amendment plainly disqualifies insurrectionists from public office. The rule of law can’t survive when a tyrant can immunize all of his minions from federal prosecution

So grantmaking is thus a quasi-judicial function in some sense, or at least it should be justified for many of the same reasons.

There’s no way that science that is the product of a political decision process for grant-making will remain legitimate amongst scientists and the public—no way the public will buy into this.
