I've just renewed our mortgage with our fixed rate from early 2022 expiring and it's costing several hundred pounds more every month now. Our weekly shop has gone up by £200 a month too. So thank God the Chancellor is bringing in a raft of measures that will save... *checks notes* £2 per month.

It's funny that a full ten years after Brexit, the government has discovered that it can change tariffs to our benefit. So far as I can see, every government in the last twenty years has had zero economic policy beyond juggling how much tax to put on cigarettes and marginal fiddling with mortgages.

"The government says the changes could make corporations up to £21 a year extra profit per household as they all refuse to pass the saving on" Fixed that for them

Most of the problem is that we've had what, 30 years of policy which has assumed that interest rates for housing will be fixed at a very low level.

You were one of the lucky ones that had a low rate for four years since they went back to current levels. I don't know what Burnham is meant to do about this, the stupidly low rates were never going to last.
