I got scammed last year in a much smaller scam and had debated talking about it publicly, but why not? People should know this stuff happens. In my case, there was no real harm done, but might as well share the story.

I get a lot of scam victims as clients and they often feel humiliated and really angry at themselves. This is what I tell them: you got taken by a professional. That’s like getting beaten up by a professional MMA fighter. It’s no reflection on you. Pros are very good at what they do.

I got phished a couple weeks ago. I work in Accounts Payable for a company, so I get lots of stuff emailed to me. It mentioned a document at a link, this is not suspicious, and then it looked like MS 365 was asking me to log in, which I often have to do to swap between accounts. 1/

When the login failed, I tried a second time, then realized what was actually going on, and changed my password immediately. Looking at the email there were signs it wasn’t what it purported to be, but so much of what it asked for was normal that it got me. 2/2

Always double check what you're really signing into. Also, 2FA methods like security keys and passkeys which verifies the domain really helps here because it blocks most phishing attempts (your account can't be hacked remotely, they must have access to your 2FA = accessing your computer directly)

An elderly family member got taken for a *lot* a few years ago, but was too embarrassed let anyone know for the longest time. If only Tucker Carlson had encouraged people to sagre their stories, he might have had a chance to recover at least some of it.

Got a phone call from "Chase Security," caller ID showed Chase's phone number. So I took the call. After being told my account had been hacked and I needed to move my money out of my account, I decided instead to walk across the street to my branch and do it in person. They said, nope, that's not us

In my case, it was in a small, private forum in which books are sold. The forum is generally (though not entirely) for out of print books that are hard to find, and I've bought and sold books via that forum for years without any problem.

Over the last few months, there had been multiple posts on the forum warning about a scammer who had a pattern: not willing to share pictures of the books. Asking if the buyer will pay via "friends & family" (not protected) on Paypal instead of "goods and services." Also, being based in Portugal

The person who operates the forum... is not necessarily great, and frequently deletes those threads with those warnings. But, so many people who buy/sell those books use the forum, it's hard to avoid. But, anyway... I was at least somewhat forewarned of a scammer.
