Anyone who thinks the NYC subways are scary does not ride the NYC subways. Or perhaps hasn't since the 1980s (and even then it wasn't as bad as people claimed).

I cannot emphasize enough that the New York City subway is not scary. It’s one of my favorite parts of living here. I grew up in the suburbs having to drive on highways everywhere and that’s way scarier

Yup. Same. But people seem to think that the story of Bernie Goetz was that the Subways were crime ridden horrors, rather than the reality, that it was *nonsense media coverage* of the subways that led people like Goetz to assume they were crime ridden horrors.

Weekdays after the evening rush could get a little tense back in the early part of the 80s. Most folks I knew had the number of a black car service handy for the ride home if they were going out after work.
