There is a lot to take in here, some speculation, but I really believe we are on the cusp of something new!!

I know it's not exactly your vision, but I would say that we're a little ways past the cusp already! Definitely in agreement that we should no longer be bound by the limitations of spreadsheets past or more modern BI tools that keep you at arms length from the actual data.

R commander is the other option. GUI for R.

It’s very on brand for Microsoft to increase the processing limits of an application without making sure it can process up to the new limit.

lol I mean that is every complex piece of software imo, but usually they are so hard to use that normies don’t experience it. Excel is so easy to use that it is the classic normie footgun.

"Analyze in Excel" is freaking awesome though. The pivot table/chart is just a drag and drop UI for a server side data model with relationships, hierarchies, and calculated measures. Just needs better UI handling for slow queries and too-large result sets.
