After having conversations with a bunch of people in person at the con and online, I went to the feedback panel and raised this issue. The con chair's response was swift: "I only just heard about this and I absolutely don't accept that kind of thing here." The program chair passed away recently ...

Absolutely disgusted that panels like this are allowed at Shore Leave con this weekend.

Thank you for doing this. This didn’t sound like the Shore Leave I attended years ago, or the con many of my friends have attended for so many years. I’m very sad to hear about Inge Heyer. Well done to the con chair for their response.

Oh, and @jessiegender.bsky.social missed one. We also had this on the schedule. The same four people also presented eight other panels about various SFF properties (Avatar, Agents of Shield, etc). The descriptions are fairly benign but 12 panels with the same foursome does strike me as odd. ...

As a note, I didn't attend any of these, because I'm on staff and don't get to see panels. I have heard from someone who went to the "checklist" panel, and they said dissenting views were not welcome and it felt very one-sided.

so I absolutely understand that some things slip through the cracks. (Like most fan run cons, programming is chosen pretty last minute.) I recommended a public apology given how much attention it's gotten online and people saying they won't attend now. And then the panels' organizer spoke up. ...

He just wanted to have a shouting match. He got me into it a little bit, but I backed down as the chair begged us to stop. The moderator wanted the last word, though, and kept going. The chair said they'd look into it and reach out to both of us. I'm pretty sure his first reaction will stand. ...

I've been on staff for Shore Leave for about 25 years now. I love my Shore Leave family. The paradox of tolerance is real, though, and it matters. This isn't an IDIC situation. We cannot tolerate intolerance.
