I absolutely LOVED this story. It's prompting me to read more about Indigenous authority in heritage collections, too.

Travel across North America learn how the efforts of a new generation of digital librarians are returning indigenous knowledge to its rightful stewards. See The Map That Roared and much more in this digital story from LF intern Thomas Gagnon-van Leeuwen. www.libraryfutures.net/post/indigen...

"The 'average' museum Website visitor is female, holds a degree in higher education, is approximately 36 years old, is from North America, occupies a job in a museum-related field, is Caucasian, has an average annual income of $53,520 (US), and spends an average of 7.5 hours a week surfing the Web."

In the same vein, from a museum in the Philippines: "VISITORS WITH LIMITED HEARING AND SIGHT Audio guides are available for download via the [redacted] Museum app." I downloaded the app. If there's anything in there for D/HH visitors, I can't find it. 🤨

Part of my PhD involves checking museum websites for what information they offer for visitors w/disabilities. My fave so far, from Denmark: "Hearing and visually impaired: By contacting our Visitor Services in advance it is possible to obtain permission to touch selected sculptures with gloves."

In their defense, lower down it mentions "The Concert Hall is equipped with equipment for transmission to hearing aids."

Oh hey, the specfic author I hooked up with over a decade ago - who immediately got weird and clingy, so I blocked him - is now "proudly toxic" and uses AI openly in his work. Don't fuck libertarians, it's not worth it.

I'm reading a book and thought of something to do on my phone. I picked up my phone. I had already forgotten what I was going to do. Good job brain!

From Indexing by @seananmcguire.bsky.social - "Judi’s hands flashed and danced. No one translated for her. I had to wonder how frustrating that was, to be trapped forever in a forest full of people who should have been your sisters, but who didn’t make any effort to give you a voice."

Happy retirement, Lonnie! So glad we met at ICOM 2019 in Kyoto, and his book "A Fool's Errand" was a huge help to me as the director of the National Deaf Life Museum. I dream of growing up to be as cool as Lonnie Bunch, and I hope when I retire I leave behind as stellar a legacy as he does.

I still haven't managed to look up the tool-using percussionist cockatoos @tkingfisher.com mentioned but they sound delightful.

If you were at LA Worldcon, please (if you wish) share something cool you learned or saw or a fave exchange or thing. I am on a plane headed home, and still carrying a bit of the community vibe with me, like a chemtrail. Wait, is that a good simile?

I've had long hair since I was a teenager. Why did it take me 30 years to figure out that I can bring hair wrap towels from home ON TRIPS? Seriously life-changing, especially when there's only one actual bath towel.

Messing about with my old Instapaper archive, and apparently once upon a time I saved a Google search for 'ron paul baby bucket' ... I'm not even going to try to figure out what that was about.

This means he's lost. As a lifelong DC area resident and a museum professional for 13 years, I guarantee the signs will have no impact on attendance. If you've decided to go to NMAH, you're not going to turn around because of signs. I expect the Streisand effect to increase attendance, too.

Oh shit Android has allowed you to choose your gender since v14 so apps can conjugate gendered languages correctly? This is fucking awesome 🎉

The 13th annual international Gender Census 2026 is now open until at least 13th August 2026! survey.gendercensus.com It's for anyone whose gender (or lack thereof) isn't described by the M/F binary. It's short and easy, and results are useful in academia, business and self-advocacy. #LGBTQ

After having conversations with a bunch of people in person at the con and online, I went to the feedback panel and raised this issue. The con chair's response was swift: "I only just heard about this and I absolutely don't accept that kind of thing here." The program chair passed away recently ...

Absolutely disgusted that panels like this are allowed at Shore Leave con this weekend.

As a note, I didn't attend any of these, because I'm on staff and don't get to see panels. I have heard from someone who went to the "checklist" panel, and they said dissenting views were not welcome and it felt very one-sided.

Oh, and @jessiegender.bsky.social missed one. We also had this on the schedule. The same four people also presented eight other panels about various SFF properties (Avatar, Agents of Shield, etc). The descriptions are fairly benign but 12 panels with the same foursome does strike me as odd. ...

He just wanted to have a shouting match. He got me into it a little bit, but I backed down as the chair begged us to stop. The moderator wanted the last word, though, and kept going. The chair said they'd look into it and reach out to both of us. I'm pretty sure his first reaction will stand. ...

I've been on staff for Shore Leave for about 25 years now. I love my Shore Leave family. The paradox of tolerance is real, though, and it matters. This isn't an IDIC situation. We cannot tolerate intolerance.

so I absolutely understand that some things slip through the cracks. (Like most fan run cons, programming is chosen pretty last minute.) I recommended a public apology given how much attention it's gotten online and people saying they won't attend now. And then the panels' organizer spoke up. ...

I've been a T-Mobile customer since I got my first cell phone in 2002. I switched to Mint Mobile today because I'm tired of paying $75/mo for services I don't need. I'm now paying a fraction of that, but somehow I feel bad about leaving a company I've been with for 24 years. Feelings are silly.

I think my favorite thing about NAD conferences is the eavesdropping. Deaf people don't get to do that much. I'm not saying I snoop on things, but rather I like the ability to be in a crowded space and actually understand what is happening around me. People talking about life, the World Cup, etc.

Help me out, internet: I'm having dinner and the place is showing tonight's Rakuten Eagles vs Seibu Lions game. The Rakuten fans are doing a motion that looks exactly like the Atlanta Braves tomahawk chop. Is that where they got the idea, or is it supposed to be something else? Google isn't helpful.

Why no inflight pic menu at mealtime? They walk around asking chicken or beef, fish or pasta, could have a laminated card or two with pictures of 🐔+🐮, 🐟+🍝. Very simple images, so you're not promising a specific dish. Good for nonnative speakers, deaf, intellectual disability, listening to music...

@pascalpixel.com Hi there! I think I submitted a Horse bug report via the website AI help chat, it keeps telling me it's elevated it to you, but there's no email confirmation or anything. This was a few days ago so I thought I'd check, does the AI really forward you bug reports? Thanks!

Every time I have a virtual meeting, Zoom offers to take notes. It sounds like a great feature! But until it can capture sign language, it's useless for 90% of my meetings...

"Prior to submission, the text was copyedited with the assistance of generative AI. All substantive content, analysis, and interpretation are the authors' own." Thanks, I hate it, AAM/Exhibition.

Dismayed that the Deafness bunny from @plushiedreadfuls.bsky.social donates money to an oral-only organization. Why not Hands & Voices which supports ALL deaf children? And the "general 'Bell' theme for hearing loss" is off-putting too. They have so many cute plushies, but this misses the mark. :(
