Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) was released on VHS and LaserDisc in the U.S. 38yrs ago today, 6yrs after its 1982 theatrical debut. It sold over 14 million units, becoming one of the best-selling home video releases of the era.

Yeah, the VHS didn't come out, until 1988. My mother took me, to a now-defunct department store, to buy it!

Crazy to recall that it generally took a couple of years before titles were on VHS. ET was one of the longest and I well remember the fuss when it finally came out on VHS. WHSmith had multiple rows of them.
