i know everyone has been dying for my take on emily wilson's review of nolan's odyssey and so here it is. it should be an embarrassment to whoever edited it. when a writer files copy like that, you should know how controversial it will be and go above and beyond to help them shore up their take.

once a writer of a review is on bluesky writing extremely long numbered threads and even apologies to correct their own already-published story, that story's editor should be personally apologizing to the writer for having failed them so fucking hard. you do NOT want to see that happen.

i don't agree with a lot of wilson's points, but from an editor's perspective, i can see some ways that the entire argument could be much stronger and more cohesive, not as a film review per se but as a far more direct comparison to the original poem and a critique of what nolan chose to change.

i think what nolan chose to change about the poem is FASCINATING (i loved the movie. i also love wilson's translation by the way). but i also can understand why somebody would dislike it, because he made some very unusual and specific changes.

anyway, if one of y'all is ever filing a story like that, you should know what you have, and if an editor takes a very light touch to it, you should know that you are getting fucked. i've had it happen to me before; there are absolutely published takes of mine that i think are dumb af. it happens...

and that's also why i'm so grateful for the times in my life that i've had an editor highlight a sentence and be like "girl, what?" we all need that shit sometimes. and sometimes MANY sentences need to be highlighted. a good editor is a blessing.

while i'm here, chris nolan's films have occasionally made me incandescently wrathful in ways that can and have confused others. (i hate the prestige, for example. hate it!!) he has such a specific style! i'd actually love to read a more cohesive 'hater review' of the odyssey. share em if you got em

I am an OG Nolan hater. I haven't seen the Odyssey yet so not commenting on that, but in general there are so many annoying things about him it is difficult to summarize. Broadly speaking he is clearly talented, but those talents are almost always in the service of something that deeply sucks.

I read her review and I mainly agree with it, but I can see very clear points someone should have brought up with her. Like the β€œblack best friend” point was clearly aimed at confronting the contraversy in casting

I really enjoyed her criticism and that it was from a PhD historian's perspective. I love stuff like that. I don't necessarily agree with all her points (nor do I feel the need to), but it was just fun to read and I didn't mind that it was kind of ADHD. 1/

A buddy of mine who is a English teacher with his take and trying not to spoil it for me (have yet to see it): - Wilson needs to know that Nolan was making a film, not a line-by-line adaptation of the poem. Nolan needs to know that he made a bad movie.

Totally unrelated to her review of the movie, I immediately put her translation of the Odyssey on my Libby hold list. Truly excited to read a modern translation by someone who is such an expert.

it's fantastic!!! and i truly hope that people reading her review aren't put off by her so much that they don't still check it out. i'm a former english major so i have previously read other versions of the odyssey and hers is now easily my favorite

Yeah! Hopefully people don't conflate her thoughts on a movie with her scholarship or her deep knowledge of the Odyssey itself. If my Libby waiting queue is any indicator, plenty are gonna read it! Btw, samesies on major! Creative Writing out of U of Arizona (and now I hack AIs... Lol)
