Ok so maybe this is on me for not having watched the films as I understood that the new ghost in the shell was based on the manga not the films... But like, it's really really hard to follow...

i went into it knowing nothing about ghost in the shell and ended up dropping it for the same reason. like i normally love shows that throw you into complex worlds without exposition, but the balance is way off with this one will probably read the manga instead and see how that goes

It feels like they still expect everyone to have seen the films and have a base level understanding of the lore but I also gather film fans don't like the lighter tone...

yeah agreed, so maybe the target audience is actually manga fans who hated the films? haha. i personally heard about the lighter tone ahead of time and that's what got me excited- supposed to be whimsically existential, like cowboy bebop

for me the issue is that the first two episodes had these dense political discussions that are impossible to remember if you don't already know what they're talking about sure i will understand more about the world in 5 or 6 episodes, but by then, i'll have forgotten the discussion from episode 1

so if the political discussion isn't meant to be understood in episode 1 and is too dense to be remembered several episodes later when you have more context- what is its purpose? am i expected to go back and rewatch that episode later? or am i supposed to just not care about what's being said?

While I acknowledge this is likely bait. It's not about being spoon fed, it's about the show feeling like you're missing some key context to fully understand what's going on. Curiosity is useless if you can't explore it.
