GOP launches investigation into the 1st, 5th, and 6th amendments

Martin Austermuhle@maustermuhle.bsky.social

The Republican-led House Oversight Committee has launched an investigation into alleged jury nullification initiatives led by @freedcproject.bsky.social and @harrietsdreams.bsky.social, reports my @washingtonsun.com colleague Jenny Gathright: www.washingtonsun.com/metro/house-...

Not only do jurors and grand jurors have a right to nullify, individual citizens also have a right to advocate for nullification to the public. This investigation is unlawful retaliation against the exercise of core constitutional rights.

To be fair, though, I’m pretty sure it has not been clearly established that nullification is even a right, let alone a “core constitutional right,” so your claim can only be a normative one. Lots of reasons to agree normatively, but descriptively there are reasons to think you’re wrong.

Unlawful retaliation against the exercise of core constitution rights would be a recurring plank on the GOP platform (if they bothered to have one)
