As with Facebook and others, an alternative to GitHub will need to find a way to bridge the community around it (discussions/issues/etc.), to overcome network effects. That is the hard part, not building the platform, or the hosting. I fear we are way past "if you build it, they will come".

Agreed. GitHub is a lot more than hosted Git repos. I think in many cases the biggest barrier isn't even the community: it's the integrations. e.g. all the services that use GitHub login, and have native build integrations. I literally just built one with EmDash.

Just a guess, but I would imagine that any business that came out of this would get seed funding pretty easily, probably from people in the room at Connect.

FWIW I’m confused by the license requirement — curious whether allowing AGPL or even BSL would substantively detract from the goals here. (I assume the main goal is awareness/interest in building on the git backend, w/ the long-tail of “find and seed future customer”)

I think those are just examples of permissive licenses, not a comprehensive list. If it does exclude copyleft licenses it's probably because they are a nightmare for any company to use

This competition is specifically about projects that use Cloudflare Artifacts as the primitive for Git

For agent-first Git, every repo action should show which agent made it, what permission it used, and which human or policy authorized it. A commit history without an authorization history will get hard to trust fast.
