I never used Twitter. I’m not really sure what I should be posting here. In absence of this experience, I will just post what’s on my mind currently. Amazon’s 5 day RTO is going to force me out of the company, and I’m now going through a real job search for the first time in my life. It’s hard.

I’m a software engineer and have been in the industry for about ten years now, but to my luck haven’t had to extensively job search in that time - I’ve sort of fallen into every job I’ve had. I’m confident I can interview into a role pretty much anywhere, but I am anxious about screening.

It’s frustrating that I actually enjoy working at Amazon, and my team wants to keep me, but S-team decisions disallowing remote work are just going to upend this job. If I can find something equivalent, fine… but if I can’t, there’s a real chance this is life changing (in a bad way).

Ultimately I’m aware that I’m in a better spot than a lot of people, and I won’t end up homeless or anything (unless I completely fumble here, but it would likely take *years* of unemployment), but that doesn’t make the situation any less gut wrenching. Instability is the mind killer. I’m nervous.

Thanks for the insight. I've been in the industry just about 10 years, across two companies. Both jobs, I got that first step through my network. I haven't utilized my network this time, yet, but I'll get there. Mostly I'm afraid it'll get back around to my team and I'll lose my job faster 😅

Thanks. I’ll make it through, but change is scary, and I’m at a point in my life where I would really like stability more than excitement. I would really like to just find a way to make everything work as soon as possible, then stay like that for, idk, a decade or so.

It’s an interesting mental paradox. Change is inevitable and yet resistance occurs at the intersection of wanting to have control of a future that does not yet exist or trying to stay in a past full of comfort. Remember, we only have control today. To new beginnings!! Cheers to a life worth living.
