That is garbage language. It says, among other things: "...is when the player has control of the ball with the possibility of: ... *gaining possession of the ball" If you have control of the ball do you not already have possession of the ball?

by the ref training I first received on this about 8 years ago, that LAG defender was definitely making a deliberate play. Of course, it's tough to award a goal to a guy who is probably 10 yards offside, but still...
