yes 1st person POV is currently "in" with a lot of people but when I started writing, people got on the internet and claimed constantly that 1st person POV was for people too lazy to learn the craft of conveying deep POV in third. people have always had weird preferences & always will!

“I have had readers come up to me at book signings and say, to my face, ‘I won’t read this book of yours because it’s in third person.’ ” slate.trib.al/T4OhzHf

nothing will ever reshape literary culture forever, it's just whatever books were the latest gateway books. My personal theory is that first person is currently having its moment because a lot of the recent breakout books (ACOTAR, Fourth Wing)--the kind that bring in NEW obsessed readers, were 1st.

(I honestly don't notice POV unless it's being written poorly--if I am thinking about what POV your book is in, we've gotten way into the weeds. I'm actually starting to second-guess myself if Fourth Wing & ACOTAR were actually 1st person now. MAYBE NOT? LOL)

anyway having been a romance writer for 18 years now, I am on my second spin around on every long trend and like my 15th on the shorter ones. LOL

I remember the first time I heard a craft talk on romance (back in 2015) the going philosophy was that first person didn't work well because readers didn't want to be inserted directly into the sex scenes! How things change lol.
