I've been thinking about this a lot because of all the talk about how Dolly Parton "didn't take sides" and I think she's proof that if you don't want to talk about politics you don't have to, but she took sides with her money & her actions and her side was pretty clear. So is Sheeran's, I guess.

I fucking hate "I don't take sides" people, which is just siding with the oppressor and hoping you'll have plausible deniability. You're not apolitical, you're not neutral, you're just doing this:

And it's taking a very specific stand of "I don't think this is political, I think you're an idiot for making a fuss over it." Which is similar to Dolly - she was in the "Of course I have gay friends, why would you even need to ask?" box. Which I think matters too.

yeah. he could have said “macklemore is on the tour” and if they cancelled on him, he could make it clear he’d pay all the crew regardless. would have gained a lot of kudos and wouldn’t have to be explicitly ”political”.

He’s, I’ve also been thinking about this. Ms. Parton didn’t discuss institutions, but she funded inclusive and gracious alternative institutions. No just helped individuals— built new ways.

I think Dolly “didn’t take sides” in that she tried to do the right thing and didn’t support even bad liberals by holding to a party line. If you see American politics as a sport and Democrats and Republicans are just teams, sure, she didn’t take sides. She was too busy doing real work.
