The etymology of Finnish and Estonian names for Sweden, Ruotsi and Rootsi, is 'ro', row. In Orthodox Karelia, east of Finland, ruotsit (plural) did not just refer to Swedes. It was a general name for Lutherans, typically citizens of the Swedish Kingdom, including Finns and likely also Estonians.

The further east in the Finno-Ugric sphere you went, the more vague the definition of ruotsit got. Komi people and Udmurts included northwestern Russians in it too. Ruotsit is an archaic term, related to Rus. In modern Finnish, a Swede is ruotsalainen. Fenno-Swede suomenruotsalainen.

The Finnish and Estonian names for Russia, Venäjä and Venemaa, are not variations of Rus. The Estonian name is literally 'boat+land' in proto-Finnic, but linguists argue this is a coincidence. They also argue that suomalainen, a Finn, isn't related to suomaalainen, marshlander, so... 🤷🏼

That is the logics of Nato solidarity. Let the countries closest to the rotten bunch pay the biggest price for their own protections sake also. It is just hard to see that being different from all other relationships outside of the alliance.
