The most disturbing thing about Russia is how little it values human life. You can sense it there even when nothing happens. It's unsettling to me. Now that indifference has spread to the West 😑 A human life is worth very little. The conditions are there for a repeat of the 1940s.

Standards of US diplomacy have degraded a bit

Calling Norway a "shit house" country is relatively minor compared to threatening to invade your ally* and trying to break up another, but it's nevertheless extraordinary that the nation has decided to go down with Captain Shits His Pants. Down the shitter 🫡

*Performative protests might actually have been useful in these instances, but as late Senator Graham said, "who gives a shit..." No shit?!

Do you think that 50% of French voters would be so keen on cutting off Ukraine and normalizing relations with Russia if some of the sabotage attacks on France were actually attributed to Russia? Cyber attacks, sabotage on infrastructure, a drone incursion into a naval base, etc. I don't know.

That Ukraine is a money pit, that Russia cannot be beaten, that Russia shouldn't be beaten because destabilizing a nuclear-armed state would be bad. That the only thing that makes sense is continuing buying Russian oil and gas...

The words of the Belgian prime minister ring in my ears. He says that most people in Western Europe want to do this but are too chicken to say it.

The bestest president ever loves Denmark now, based on airy deals from one of his two brain cells. Saturday he wanted more immigrants from non shit house countries like Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Sunday he didn’t want any immigrants from Norway. My Norway is now, officially a shit house country.

🇷🇸 Serbia's election-winning Student List vows to halt arms exports reaching Ukraine via Western intermediaries, Reuters reports. It also rejects EU sanctions on Russia. Jovo Bakić calls Moscow a "historic partner and protector."

🇷🇸 Serbian students ousted Vučić – a real achievement. But alongside their trips to Brussels, their May 17 Kosovo Memorandum calls Kosovo an inseparable part of Serbia and its defense a duty to ancestors. This will slow Serbia’s EU accession, while Russia keeps exploiting Kosovo to sow division.

Back to the attack on the university campus in Kyiv. These students were on the same route and lucky for them they were not nearer the dormitory, when a missile exploded ahead of them. #RussiaIsATerroristState

This chart is insane. This shows Russia's casualties over time compared to Russia's territorial gains in Ukraine over the last five years. No sane or rational person would say continuing the war to try and take more of Ukraine's territory is worth the casualties.

Serbia was a pro-Russian country and is still a pro-Russian country. Assuming it has a pro-EU or pro-NATO population that has been trapped under pro-Russian leadership would be wrong. Anti-Western sentiment is still prevalent.

🇷🇸 Serbia’s opposition leaders: On sanctions: "We respect Russia both as a great power and as a historically important partner for us, and in many cases, even a protector. There will be no changes in this regard.

Assuming that the opposition will overturn absolutely everything would also be wrong. Many issues simply weren't on the ballot. The opposition had a narrower goal: Running a successful anti-corruption campaign. That it did.

Let's just be happy for Serbia without bringing EU accession into it. We have candidates that are committed, who've done the work, and have a realistic shot at joining in the next few years. Serbia is a decade or two away from meeting EU membership requirements in the best case scenario.

They haven't even had a proper debate on whether they want to join. Suggesting that Serbia is suddenly on the same line as for example Montenegro seems a bit unfair to Montenegro. If we're serious about enlargement, let's be serious. The EU shouldn't treat accession like

It's remarkable to me that, even as France, Germany and Spain flirt with the temptation of far-right rule, voters with long-term experience of it in Poland, Hungary and now Serbia have gone to such great efforts to rid themselves of it.

In yesterday’s deserved euphoria over Vucic’s defeat and Lula’s knife-edge re-election, no one noticed that Bulgaria held presidential elections. The pro-Russian incumbent underperformed and the pro-EU challenger beat the polls but turnout was a paltry 20%. Impossible to guess how the runoff will go

If you wonder why Im only classifying them by geopolitical stance and suspect this buries nuance, consider this: the pro-Ru incumbent’s main message going forward: “we will spread our message of peace” and her backer, the PM: “on Sunday we will choose peace or war”. This is a geopolitical election!

OMG, both political extremes in France are pro-Putin and against supporting the struggle for justice, rule-of-law or democracy of Ukraine. And this country would provide Europe's new nuclear umbrella? This is all very bad for the unity, strength and, ultimately, values of Europe.

Any talks/negotiations about a post-war security arrangement for Europe need to start from the indisputable fact that Russia’s neighbours have an acute need of protection from Russia whereas Russia has no demonstrable need for protection (and it already has nukes for that).
