When I was a kid, there was this rock in the forest along the highway between my town and the nearest city—in the middle of absolute nowhere—where someone had spray painted “USA WANTS WAR”. I remember it clearly, how it was the first time I was made aware of USA’s existence and what their deal was.

It’s one of those weird core memories; seeing a spray painted rock from the car window distinctly widening my perception of the world at that moment. Like, there’s something/someplace far away called USA, and they want war. Such a stupidly simple message painted on a rock really took root.

The more I think of it (and I’ve had a few drinks so indulge me), the more fascinated I am with this phenomenon. The impact of a piece of forest graffiti. Either it’s the power of no-nonsense copywriting, or it’s some kind of magic spell. But that rock and those three words have haunted me since.
