My aunt* sat me down and told me my cousin's little boy is autistic, in the same tones as she'd use for saying he had some kind of terrible life-limiting disease. Now, I am not autistic (afaik), but my jaunty, "Oh, that's cool! My BFF's autistic too!" response has never seen a more flabbered gast.

Anyway, I am really not great with kids but Cousin's Kiddo is a sweetie and we play Lego PlayStation games and get along great, which tbh is more than can be said for me and my aunty

Even before I came out as trans, I’d been talking to my mom about how you see more autistic people because of diagnostic changes, and how if I’d grown up today I’d probably be considered to have some form of it.

She vehemently rejected the idea and even implied my difficulties were something I taught myself in adulthood, how I was always a sweet and engaged little boy. I have no feeling about whether or not I match any criteria, but me turning out to have it would be a failure for HER. Even in adulthood.
