Beautiful photo of fox hunting

Interesting story but i already know plenty about foxes... Can we get the far more important news about endangered animal populations instead Even The Onion seems like its articles are more relevant

Fascinating!

Good to know. I have been worried about their snouts.

😊

It's like polar bears diving through the ice to get food.

Maybe their noses aren't that fragile

📌

Foxes detect prey beneath the snow through a multi-sensory process, combining exceptional hearing to detect faint sounds, sensitive whiskers to detect seismic vibrations and a keen sense of smell to locate scent marks and respiratory gases escaping from under the snow.

This is the hard hitting reporting we need from news organizations

I thought it was just happy when I used to see a little fox leaping around a meadow next to where I camped. :-)

They make murder look so cute.

I broke my nose doing that once though, it's not a good idea for humans

Good for them, always root for animals over rodents.

Spoiler alert: it’s da snoot!!

Reminds me how woodpeckers deal with this problem

Their large foreheads.

We need a nation wide strike and march day for Medicare for all. If you believe in this, stay home from work if possible and join a nation wide protest to demand Medicare for all and end the strangle hold the for profit insurance companies have on us.

Watch the Google film in this article.

Well, you know what they say, "A hard head makes a great meal!"

The feet go first, punch through the snow to trap the rodent, then the snout follows and grabs.

What about the poor little mouse snout?

Honestly, that's one of the best headlines I've seen in a while

Fox populations are declining due to habitat destruction and other human activities. How about a story on that?

Information I didn't know I needed😭

So how does the Orange Baboon stick his face so far down into the Cesspool?

Believe it or not some people are interested in biology

This is what matters now?

In northern Michigan their "bark" sounds like a human screaming in pain. At night it will raise the hair on the back of your neck.

Alright, now if that isn't the most interesting seen a retired man has seen all day. #foxes

Best news story all day! 🩷

Felids, although they also hunt prey under the snow with their hearing, go paws first, claws extended to snag the prey. Fluffy fox butts sticking out of snowdrifts is a great image.

Wonderful picture to watch

They are distant cousins of Tigger. Who, as you know, tops are made out of rubber their bottoms are made out of springs.

Aww,absolutely adorable bless you, I hope you're having a lovely Winter Solstice and warmest wishes for Yule, may you be blessed with love and light, peace, hope and happiness to you blessed be ❤️ 🧚‍♀️❄️🌙😘...

Lynx, my fursona, know hows to do this as well. They mostly do it for fun though.

I do so agree...if I'm in a hurry with a reply I tend to think faster than I can keyboard and whatever the reply is ... is a jumbled mess of incoherence

Hmmm. Always wondered about that 🤭

Great article, thank you ❤️

Would that same method work on the mice under my stove? I wonder if my dog would get along with a fox…

So, I 'very got a mouse I've been trying to catch for months...maybe I need a fox ...and not a cat .

Or maybe the snow shaped their skulls?

What a great article! I had no idea that foxes could dive like that and so fast! Really cool. Interesting how animals and mammals have an innate sense of hearing and smell. Animals use it every day. Too many humans don't. They can't shut up long enough to really listen.

They just jump between the snow molecules. Easy peasy!

I love foxes.

NPR - THIS is the kind of news the people wanna see 👏 Bravo!!

out of all of the fox pics Bluesky has tried to put me on and this I'm sure is the same one that I shared too 😍

Nice

They also need around 20 mice a day to avoid starving to death.

I've always wondered how they don't squish their faces in. 🤪

Unlike the pug dog which shatters on impact.

Snout insurance. Kind of like Alfac, but for foxes.

It’s really great for them

One of my Siberian Husky's greatest joys when we get fresh snow.

Can you make another NPR account that just posts stuff like this and nothing political or sad? This is the kind of news I want all day

Now this is the kind of news I crave

My Dutch Shepherd does this same thing when he’s looking for rodents on our walks on the trails. He jumps straight up and comes down with his snout and only does it when he’s sensing mice.

It’s spelled ‘snoots’

Remember. Be careful when booping the snoot.

Wow!

Really?

Amazing!

Who are you

Is it magic? I always assumed it was magic.

Not quite as eloquent as the Fox, but out Pembroke Welsh Corgi was a master mouser as well. Thanks for the great pics of our natural environment.

We demand more wildlife and conservation news! This is great!

We had a family of fox 2 years ago. That year, not a single rodent. It was great. Last year, we had 8 bald eagles. No rodents. This year, we didn't have either. We'll have rodents. 💔

How they know what direction North is, blows my mind. 🤯

I'm not good at videos. 😕 Sorry. It happens so suddenly. And we rarely get snow here.

🤔 Anything to do with it being snow?

what a beautiful photo

I'm sorry, but that's a talent or skill that I don't need. I HATE snow!

This is how my skull works too. Sorry im not as cute as her btw. In case u even care

I wish I could teach this to my Corgi!

Now do the mouse perspective. Sudden terror teeth rocket falls from the sky.

Sly is the name of the game! 🦊

You mean their perfectly designed snouts, right?

Coyote do that too, because of similar pointed snout I assume. Amazing to witness in Yosemite Valley.

❤️

So interesting how we’re all made.

Very cool! Have watched this behavior, many times, performed by red fox, in our N Rockies landscape. Great explanation of how they can repeatedly perform this maneuver.

In other news: cheetahs are making a comeback in the North American plains with an overabundance of faces to eat. Scientists fear that the MAGA species might very well go extinct in the next couple of years.

You're in BlueSky's top trending because you spoke about foxes on BlueSky.

So they can rip into the heads of the poor little mice. Natures great.

I think you meant “snoots” @npr.org

Well, it takes one experience to realize that snow gets harder the deeper you stick your snout. And foxes didn’t get where they are without learning juuust a bit.

I've been waiting for this!

Let's say I would be less surprised than I should be.

😍😍

Fascinating!!

Let me guess. A pointy snout?

Love foxes, so cute!

😂😂😂

✨Luckily, weather conditions were considered for this study. The colder it gets (or if it is suddenly rainy or something), the more compressed and heavier the top layers of snow can become, challenging arctic foxes… which will always know way more than me about rodent hunting…!

Now, THIS is news!

“Poor little snouts” 😂

Hello there

Amazing nature!

See me with spaghetti.

Just listened to this in my car!

Nice to see NPR on here. Your website is part of my morning ritual.

I need your help and your humanity by my side, please help me 🥺💔 I need to do an operation, help me😭💔 donation link on my page in the first post💔

Is NPR still being funded by the Kochs?

This is exactly the kind of research we need.

You misspelled snoots
