"As politicians worldwide scramble to appeal to working people" This is an extraordinary claim. Is there evidence? Better transit? Lower rent? Affordable housing? Higher wages? Playgrounds? Smaller class sizes? Health care? Affordable groceries?

The city must have a really long name since NPR felt the need to shorten the it to "this city in northern England".
