Unfortunately, Elon Musk & The DOGE Boyz may need to make some cuts to the budget for the US National Botanical Gardens and maintaining bonsai trees is labor intensive.

True, but I've also seen sequoias that never really die, even after being burned to the ground and leaving a husk ... because then they just regenerate from the roots, forming a "fairy circle" of clones. So when, exactly, a tree dies can be pretty fluid.

The thing is, I have never understood this particular bonsai to be the oldest in the collection where the oldest gifted it to our country by the Japanese in 1976. I’m not entirely sure that that’s not an error. I think it is another tree that is that old.

This is a beautiful tree. And the National Arboretum is an under appreciated public treasure.

The National Arboretum in D.C. is an amazing place. If you've never seen it, go before Trump cuts the funding and sells all the plants and trees to the Qataris.
