Yes, NYC Universal Childcare is possible. Care is the real work. Care is the only work that keeps us human. And when we treat care as invisible, we do not merely suffer—we unmake the conditions that allow a country to be a country, rather than a crowd. We create fascism.

People need to be able to work. If they can't afford childcare, that means someone has to lose life saving pay, and also probably insurance as a result of having to leave a job, in some cases. Taking care of children is the first step.

Agreed. Is the problem how expensive childcare is, or how cheap their labour is? Should people be struggling to afford necessities while their boss has enough money to send Captain Kirk to space on a dildo shaped rocket for a hobby?

Sure but you gotta start somewhere. Most Americans have healthcare, most with young kids are paying basically a second mortgage for day care.

If their health insurance cost went down, wouldn't they have more money available for the childcare costs? Sorry, but I think the bedrock of any social safety net should be people not dying because they can't afford the doctor

I could have zero health insurance costs and childcare would exceed the amount I saved. That's how expensive it is in America. This is about one city doing one thing, the Mayor of NYC cannot provide universal healthcare to the city but he CAN do this and show it works.

Question: What does this actually deliver for the growing number of people who don't have kids (other than a reminder that children are an easy virtue signal and that's why anything that actually gets done is for them)? I mean good for them but maybe prove that claim for everyone?
