Lift the cap. Stop chasing immigrants away (in part) so they can continue paying into it. Oh and stop electing Republicans with stupid fiscal policies, tariffs and wars that drive up inflation and interest rates.

One partial solution: reduce congressional salaries to minimum wage, payable only for days worked tax the billionaires to make up any further needed funds.

Raising the income cap fixes the issue. Do not move the retirement date! Folks who actually physically do work can barely (if at all) work to current retirement age AND shouldn’t

Raising the income cap doesn't fix the massive shortfall SS is experiencing, because the higher payroll taxes increase the retirement payouts, erasing the gains. Also remember most of the 1% is already near retirement age. The inflow of money will become a bigger outflow in 20 years.

True, sadly. "That's still not enough to completely close the gap, so it would have to be some combination of raising taxes on ordinary workers and raising taxes on the wealthy." Raising the cap just isn't enough to get rid of the shortfall. www.marketplace.org/story/2026/0...

marketplace.orgSocial Security isn't actually "running out" of moneyThe Social Security trust fund is facing a shortfall. That means benefits could be cut in 2032, not wiped out completely, but there are solutions.

Our political “leadership” is responsible for raiding the Social Security fund to pay for their immoral and illegal wars‼️ And for lining their own pockets ‼️ I am so fucking sick of this bullshit decade after decade. Everyone needs to admit that our corrupt government needs to be replaced‼️🔥

Social Security was never "raided." Social Security keeps its surpluses in its trust fund, which happens to be a Treasury Bills account with the US government, which is what all creditors of the US govt do. Since 2010, SS has been drawing on the trust fund, aka paid back by the US govt.

Just in time for me, a Gen X, to retire. My retirement plan has never included SS as part of it bc I've always believed SS would be bankrupt/insolvent by then, even tho technically it should not be. Most GenXers will never retire.

Doesn't fix the issue, since any gains are erased by the equally lifted payouts to the 1% on retirement. SS is in serious trouble. Most of the money lent to the US govt by SS since 1935 has been paid back to SS, starting around 2010. Trump increased payments to seniors, further weakening SS.

I admit I have not followed the SS story closely for most of my life (58yr), but I'm pretty sure that I've been hearing that SS is going to run out "in the next 7 years" for all of my life. I don';t know if it will or not, but every administration uses this story line to scare up votes

It started paying out more in benefits than it took in in payroll taxes in 2010, the beginning of the end for the trust fund. The trust fund was always SS loaning money to the US govt in the form of buying T-Bills with SS surpluses. This T-Bills account is almost completely paid back now.

Social Security has been required by FDR's Social Security Act of 1935 to lend money to the US govt this whole time. There was never any theft. Social Security just happened to be the US govt's biggest creditor. They've bern paying SS back since 2010, when payouts exceeded payroll taxes.

lmao, less than seven years? seems like they’ve got a solid plan to just wing it while hoping nobody notices. Congress can’t even pass a budget on time, but we’re trusting them to fix Social Security? good luck with that.

huh, "unless Congress acts"? that’s a big "if." you really think they’ll do anything meaningful in seven years? lol, good luck with that plan. they can’t even agree on lunch.
