UNGA adopted resolution condemning the transatlantic slave trade as one of humanity’s gravest injustices. It also recognizes lasting impacts of slavery & colonialism, frames reparations as a step toward addressing historical wrongs. 123 in favor, 3 against (US, Israel, Argentina), 52 abstentions.

The pro-slavery racists may not always be in power in the US. And they have voted with Russia against Ukraine in UN resolutions on the Ukraine invasion, in the recent past. The people who support Ukraine in the USA are mostly anti-slavery. Is it wise for Ukraine to appear to lack moral conviction?

France, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom, Belgium and Germany do stand out - abstaining from it - so the ones benefited the most from colonization and slavery! Hugely disappointing- no wonder they are distrusted in Asia and Africa!

Definitely- because of all those conversions in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Australia to Christianity - over 6 centuries - and this! No reason for real decent humans stay Christian - this is not on Jesus but Church and organized Christianity means nothing good!

Also, what are the abstentions even about? I heard, wrongly, somewhere that this was some kind of “oppression Olympics” vote which I always find to be suspicious and a waste of time. But abstaining from “chattel slavery is one of the worst crimes against humanity.” Greece?

Because the current government of the US is returning to Colonialism in search of raw materials and personal enrichment. You don't think we actually gave a squat as to who ran Venezuela?
