Wonder what it would look like for libraries to host PDSs. "Go to your public library" feels like a good vibe

“go sign up for microblogging/blogging/annotations app to use the birds app” is a borderline unintelligible reply, they’re my friends/family, they will just trust me and do it but what’s the better option? selfhosted.social or maybe make my own protobase pds for my friends? or what am i missing

If atproto gets big enough why wouldn't Google/Microsoft/Apple host PDS? Honestly the win for Google is simple - they don't have to put anything in the PDS but they suddenly get access to all your permissioned data repos. The cost of hosting is a rounding error for them.

Sure, but I think part of what is going to make ATproto successful is an ecosystem that can tolerate participants at varying levels of principled-ness.

Sure! A gmail PDS would be crazy cool. Was thinking the local library might be actionable, plus I'd feel good suggesting it to people 😁

It turns out that running a PDS is incredibly easy, what's hard is running an open or semi-open PDS. You need to handle content takedowns, bots, etc. A Library would run into a whole host of issues that they're not equipped to solve.

Honestly account hosting would be a great addition to the google/microsoft/apple/proton/etc suite. Been thinking about atproto as an IDP at the company scale too, would make a lot of identity/access management easy.

Honestly the business use case is great. Data lives on storage a business controls but then "just works" with tons of apps, and does native interop. The BDS (business data server) is on my to-do list for projects.
