I'm still not sure why they added it back in to EF Core in the first place 🤔

It can be fine if you don't have to scale or project to fairly shallow DTOs. With a larger set of models and a lot of relationships, it just doesn't scale well. That being said, I maintain an old EF6/MVC5 project that's fairly massive and having to eager load is a huge pain.
