This was Jim Hacker’s idea in “Yes, Prime Minister”!!!! Well, except his was compulsory military service. At least Luxon doesn’t go that far.

No imagination. That is literally BOOT F**KING CAMP. I completed Territorial training in the 80's. It takes a fair amount of commitment to complete the basic training. Muldoon was threatening to make military training compulsory & my reasoning was I will beat him at his own game by volunteering

It was harder than it looked. More uni students in my intake but they hated us & so any excuse to put "students" on charges for extra punishment. There were also some "streeties" on diversion from court or sent by their families. They found it very difficult because already coerced.

I was in the navy for 11 years at about the same time (80s/90s). The forces don't just want any recruit, or to be a mop for unemployment. A lot of the jobs in the military have quite high academic & physical entry criteria. Luxon has no idea, having never served. At least Piggy had been in the army

Exactly. My head wasn't really in the game when I signed on. For me the physical requirements were easier than the headspace because I never bought any of mythology. This was just before the Springbok tour. But I studied Vietnamese history & the "Fall of Saigon" was still very recent.

Oh wow, we need a political sitcom called No, prime minister. "I bet voters loved it when I said cry me a river, because it shows strength. They did, didn't they?" No, prime minister
