I can't emphasise enough how important the submission by my brother @timhollo.bsky.social to the ill-conceived Royal Commission on Antisemitism is. The lateral antisemitism from fellow Jews is something Tim & I have dealt with for a long time, even before either of us used the term "anti-Zionist".

Liked the submission. Dread to think how long it would have taken to prepare. Agree we should not allow IHRA definition to creep in. Cannot help but to think that if we were to lose the word antisemitism and return it to it's true definition (as in semite), this discussion would be more relateable.

Excellent essay Tim. This line in particular stood out as something I wasn’t aware of but in hindsight makes sense: “it is a matter of acknowledged historical fact that, prior to the Nakba, Jews lived more safely and happily in many Muslim countries than we had in Europe.”

Beautifully said. The irony of Israel becoming what it is now is shattering. Unfortunately the biblical bit about 'do unto others' is in the New Testament. 'Do unto others what was done to you' is a bit more Old Testament. Not one of its better parts.

But even talking about that to a non-Jewish audience is uncomfortable, and not, I think, always well understood. Antisemitism is real and is more prominent now than any part of my lifetime, and anti-Zionism is not antisemitism. Talking about that within the Jewish community is often impossible.

Tim is able to eloquently articulate the problem with approaching this via a Royal Commission, or through politics at all, while still addressing the terms of the commission. I wish certain of my/our Jewish friends would read & engage - and for that matter, our government. I'm not holding my breath

Thank you Tim for so clearly expressing your experiences and conclusions…. Diversity of views within the Jewish community needs to be recognised by governments and all of us
