Ahhh, just got some news which should be exciting but I mostly feel as a great relief amidst the sadness of some stupid institutional decisions. Vague-posting, sorry, but there you are.

Incredible

A partial reply to a partial truth in an important post from @kossamaras.bsky.social What truths do we need to tell in politics? How deep can we go? Have we returned to an old world? Or have we entered something radically new? What possibilities remain? in-between-days.ghost.io/telling-the-...

After championship faffing and procrastination, I rediscovered the pomodoro technique today. Got 1250 words of this paper written. Finally. Same again next few days and it’ll be in good draft form. Huzzah

Went to a double feature this evening - Naza followed by The Sea. Both important, difficult films about Israel’s inhumanity to Palestinians. Naza is about dehumanisation. It is horrifying. The Sea is entirely humanising. I suspect many activists would say Naza is more impactful, but I think not

Naza is important. It reveals horrors that need to be told. It’s a historic document. But I don’t think it will change any minds. The Sea might change minds. It’s a beautiful, lovingly & movingly told story of humanity. In both cases, Israeli government reaction helps tell the story Go see them

The Hunter Valley approval has done something to people. Tim Hollo sharing George Woods on the moment faith in public institutions gives way is worth sitting with, because that is the feeling organisers will be working with for the foreseeable future.

I wrote this on Tuesday The result for @zackpolanski.bsky.social is worse than expected. My instinct is that the low turnout is a sign that a bunch of potential Greens voters didn’t bother, partly coz of the motion, partly coz the momentum has evaporated. How many times will we repeat this cycle?

If your new language is “highly accepted”, why do you need to declare those who won’t use it “the enemy”?

HUGE news Kind of shocking that it's up to the High Court to make decisions democratic governments are proving incapable of making. And kind of shocking that it was a split decision. But massive congrats to everyone who made this happen. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

As is so often the case, this powerful piece from Tim Hollo is so important. And I would add: If not now, then when? If not us, then who?

In which Tim fairly effectively argues that the COP is about as useful as a Climate League of Nations. To what effect we can actually do WITHOUT the coercive power of nation level state in driving action is a bit more of a question for me.

I strongly believe in grassroots membership election of the leader of a party that believes in grassroots democracy. I co-wrote this with @mehreenfaruqi.bsky.social a few years ago. If Mehreen wins, she’ll be the first leader of the Greens to be on the record supporting it.

theguardian.comThe Greens are founded on grassroots democracy – the leadership vote should be no exceptionNow is the time to champion participatory decision-making and rebuild the trust people have lost in democracy

I’m backing Cassian Andor and Leia Organa for co-leadership of the Australian Greens. They bring the right mix of insurgency and establishment to appeal to a large cross-section of voters across the galaxy at a moment like this. Plus, gender balance is crucial.
