The amount of game review requests I am receiving by eMail has gone up considerably the past few weeks... ...also nearly all of them have been made with GenAI... ...and yes, they all LOOK the part but don't seem to have any substance... Beautiful on the outside, hollow on the inside. :(

There's a metaphor here that I'm having trouble articulating... Notions of things being "skin deep", or how celebrity culture pushed men and women (ESPECIALLY women) to reach nigh impossible standards of appearance at the cost of everything else. That's GenAI gamedev right now. :|

I'm kinda fortunate that the vast majority of unsolicited games in my inbox aren't AI — a testament to how the adventure game sphere has (mostly) rejected the slop allure. But there is a CONCERNING amount of tools and ports for old Sierra games that are slopcoded.

GenAI has probably made it easier to compose the requests and mass-mail them, too. I've noticed an uptick in Steam key requests that are clearly AI-generated using information from the game's Steam store page.

So far I've only had one that came across like there might be some strange things going on with who was writing the messages; The rest feel like they've been done either by PR people or by the developers themselves. :B

Those have been around longer than AI though. 😄 Especially curator requests are all fake. I have yet to receive a legit review request via email under the hundreds of fake ones... so they all go right to trash. 😅

Of the ones I've gotten these past few weeks, half included Steam keys and ALL had Steam pages set up showing gameplay in a trailer, so... I don't think the ones I'm getting are "fake". :P

Also, I should mention that I ONLY pay attention to unsolicited promotional eMails which get my name or business name correct. If either are missing I typically just ignore the eMail entirely and thus I'm not counting those. :P

Oh.. no I meant the other way around. I'm getting mails from people requesting keys for my games.... and those are all fake. 😅 Sorry, I probably misread your post then. ^^

Yeah, none of my games are paid games at the moment so I'm not getting those. :B Even though I review games on my YouTube channel I don't go seeking free Steam keys because if a game is something I want to play then I'll generally be willing to buy it. ;)
