The amount of game review requests I am receiving by eMail has gone up considerably the past few weeks... ...also nearly all of them have been made with GenAI... ...and yes, they all LOOK the part but don't seem to have any substance... Beautiful on the outside, hollow on the inside. :(

There's a metaphor here that I'm having trouble articulating... Notions of things being "skin deep", or how celebrity culture pushed men and women (ESPECIALLY women) to reach nigh impossible standards of appearance at the cost of everything else. That's GenAI gamedev right now. :|

Edited the About section on my YouTube channel for the first time in years... Have a simple little message at the bottom now which reads: "Note: I do NOT use Generative AI; Crafting everything myself helps me learn and stay motivated!" I'd rather do that than plaster notices on EVERYTHING I do. :P

BTW: Slightly Related: I have a motto I live by which I came up with back when I was a teenager: "The moment you stop learning is the moment you start dying." ...and now that you know about this motto I have, is it any wonder that I have no desire to even TOUCH a GenAI prompt? :P

Curious... I was recording the last bit of gameplay I needed for the next ADG and thought I recognized a voice actor... but apparently, there's no credit for them and while the internet had a theory for years, only ONE WEEK AGO did said person confirm it was not them! :O

I have my own theory since I recognized the voice, and I'm not the only person with said theory... Maybe when I reveal it in the next ADG it'll help shake the truth loose? Still, it's a little strange that in a game where the rest of the voice cast is known one person chose to remain anonymous...

Finally got to try out hand/finger tracking with a few things in VR now that SteamVR and Steam Link support wired USB connectivity! :D ...I think for MOST things, I'm gonna prefer using the controllers, especially since they provide haptic feedback, but hands DO work better for some things! :B

One thing that's tricky is that hand tracking is noticeably lagged because of all the effort it takes to map and report hand tracking data. It's also surprisingly bad at figuring out which of my fingers is touching my thumbs so actions like movement, turning, jumping, it misses them a lot. :P

But, you can switch between controllers and hand tracking in an instant just by setting the controllers down or picking them back up, so for the few instances where hand tracking is better, like gesturing to friends or poking in-game buttons, you can easily switch for a moment, then switch back! :B

It's ridiculous how the rise of GenAI has made some people forget about the VAST array of non-GenAI resources, assets, and software, indies have been using for many, MANY years up to now for their craft. We didn't need GenAI before and many of us, myself included, do not use nor want it now. :P

RT if you don't use AI for coding

Whoo boy... Someone just contacted me as a solo dev wanting me to check out their game... ...except they're actually somehow making EIGHT games... all surprisingly far along, none of which are finished yet... ...I don't see any GenAI disclosures... ...hrrrrrrrrm...-

So, rather than write a pro/anti GenAI response, I instead decide to write this person a response warning them what's at stake if they DON'T disclose their use of generative AI. If I can't dissuade someone from using it I can at the very least try to keep them honest before it backfires on them. :P

I originally covered the third game "Labyrinth" in a filler video MANY years ago, which was a Flash game you "could" play for free, but paying a one time fee to unlock its advanced features (like registering shareware) was the best way to play it if you enjoyed it. It's part of the new pack. :B

That said, Labyrinth was a HUGE step forward compared to the first two games. The very first GemCraft is also very basic. The second GemCraft game "Chapter Zero", while being a bit more advanced can also be incredibly frustrating at times, at least in the early game before you're powered up. :P

OK, complications dealt with... still probably gonna be later than usual on the next NNRG video, but not by a HUGE amount. :P

Wholly geeze... trying to change the anchoring of a user interface control in Godot Engine AT RUNTIME is insane. Why did they NOT make a function which just does what the editor does when selecting presets? (And no, the commands for using those presets at runtime DO NOT work as you would expect.)

I mean, I get that there's few instances where you would need to do such a thing, but I hit one of those instances and it's turning into a nightmare. >_<

...OK, so... I figured out how to get this to work like it does in the editor. The trouble is that the command which is supposed to do this uses default arguments which do not match what the editor does, which was causing my UI object to get its size set to ZERO. It's working now. :P

*sigh* ...it's so discouraging the number of people going down the path of Generative AI, all thinking it's helping them, not realizing what it's going to do their motivation and skills in the long run, not to mention the damage it's doing to their credibility. >_<

Even more sad... I got into gamedev at a young age but video games are only most THIRD most favourite thing behind two others, both of which are industries which are getting CRUSHED under the weight of the digital world, thus ALL THREE of my most favourite things are being strangled to death. ; - ;

"most THIRD most" should read "my THIRD most"... ...it's late, I'm tired, and I STILL have work to do right up to my bedtime because this day's been nuts... >_<

The only saving grace is that because GenAI is unprofitable and no one would be willing to pay what it costs to actually run it, everyone dabbling with it now is going to ultimately get cut off from it, forcing them to go back to using their SKILLS to develop things instead of prompts. :P

Want to know a neat trick to get game companies to stop using GenAI to make games? Don't buy the games they make with it. It's that simple. Are you gonna miss out? Yes, but so what? Do you know how many OTHER games you could be playing? Your Steam library probably does! ;)

Project AB is up to v0.077, having gone up by .001 increments each time I complete various core tasks. Looking back at where I'm at now compared to what I struggled with when I started, there's a certain irony in knowing I could've done all I've done so far twice as fast knowing what I know now. :P

Plus Side: I'm running into fewer instances of bugs mystifying me; I can usually figure out what the problem is pretty quickly now. :B Extra Plus Side: I'm optimizing WAY better than when I started. Since this is a physics-heavy 3D/VR game that's kind of really important. :P

So a couple people in Finland who've been watching my vids and such haven't been able to access my website for over a couple weeks now. I've done checks using online tools but none of them check Finland specifically and nearly every other country can access it fine. (Except Ukraine and Singapore.)

I already recommended back when this issue began that they contact their ISPs, but so far there's been no resolutions or updates and there's very little else I can do. :(
