when socialism is simply *unthinkable*, one who supposes that human labor may soon be largely unnecessary can only imagine two futures: one in which society abandons, leaves out, betrays the vast majority of people, and one in which, despite no longer regarding human labor as a practical necessity,

we conjure new jobs so we can continue to gate access to homes, food, electricity, healthcare &c behind either finding employer(s) to sell enough of one's time to to be allowed to live, or depending upon someone who has found such an arrangement, thus being subject to their often-tyrannical whims

a world in which, recognizing our society's capacity to care for its people, we do so as a matter of course? that is simply beyond consideration. simply not an option

been trying to express how Americans' reflexive embrace of Luddism is the ultimate capitalist realism, the Puritanical belief that the only permissible consequence of displacing workers from their jobs would be mass starvation

it is, at the most fundamental, mathematical level, a matter of collective labor, and the impossibility of fairly valuing this technology in a capitalist society that holds among its central tenets the idea that labor theories of value are woke and gay

I think you're right, and that the latter is more likely. Look at how many people have "bullshit jobs" now (re: Graeber). That will likely increase as a more attractive alternative to the former option, and everyone who forces this system on us will pat themselves on the back for averting the worst.
