Skype will officially shut down in May.

I listened to a podcast on the history of Amazon, and it took nearly a decade to turn a profit. Sears dropped the ball heavily, 100%. But imagine pitching a new service that will constantly lose money for a decade until it becomes so entrenched everyone uses it?

Even with their existing infrastructure to make it happen more easily, it's a hard sell. And the dot com bubble didn't help at all in confidence in online stores. Amazon is lucky as hell to become what it is though. Sears just wasn't interested in that business transition that would cost so much.

Wait… why? Skype was awesome back in the day — and honestly just needed a more social refresh to keep people invested in its service. It’s a shame to see it go, but hey, nothing good in life ever lasts forever! To cheers to a fond legacy 🥂

They killed themselves. They messed with a good, simple, reliable app, which made it possible for others to swoop in. I miss the old Skype, which I used frequently, before Microsoft bought it. From that point on it was mostly frustration and I finally gave up.

If you're still on the same computer they're probably still in your app data folder. You can retrieve the databases and open them with some specialized viewers.

Same here, I stopped using it not long after Microsoft took it over because they basically broke it. It was almost unusable for months and the interface kept changing. Skype was simple, reliable, and useful before it was bought out. By making it unreliable they opened the door to competing apps.
