Taken a step back from life to care for my dad, and it kills me that he can't remember his own amazing Tolkien story from the 1950s: being an office junior at Allen & Unwin when the first LOTR proofs came in, and poring over them with his colleagues in sheer wonder. What a moment, to see that first.

Wow. That’s a heck of a moment. And *you* have the story now, so he did the job of handing it down, and you’re doing the job of keeping the flame lit.

I’m adding it to my repertoire of “great stories I’ve half remembered and will further mangle in the telling”
