My online girlfriend was so shocked by the Ukraine drone strike on the Russian data centre that she's been too upset to message me all day.

Found in my dad's loft - guessing my grandmother was involved in delivering these. I don't tend to receive political leaflets through the door where I live - are they still like this?

Spent a couple of traumatic minutes considering this, and alighted on the opening titles of the BBCs adaptation of The Day of the Triffids. No idea whether it was particularly scary in itself but I just knew that something very bad was going to happen.

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

What's the stupidest joke you most have to fight the urge to tell? Mine is not replying to questions about whether I have any allergies with 'we'll find out together, I guess'.

Some really interesting replies/quotes (I'd pick Harry Lime or Steerpike out of those mentioned.) But my top choice would be the truck in 'Duel'. Which I've never got over since I saw the film as a kid

Taken a step back from life to care for my dad, and it kills me that he can't remember his own amazing Tolkien story from the 1950s: being an office junior at Allen & Unwin when the first LOTR proofs came in, and poring over them with his colleagues in sheer wonder. What a moment, to see that first.

Keeping track of the Sandringham derby online. My son appears to have bowled well. Disappointing that the Play Cricket wagon wheel doesn't include the big tree inside the boundary.

Enjoying the athletics but a bit baffled by the throwing events. Got these incredibly fine tolerences for where to hurl it from, but basically it hits the ground then some bloke wanders over with a marker post and says 'yeah, about there'

My view possibly skewed by growing up drinking in villages with ruddy faced pillar of the community kindly uncle figure type landlords

It's a *massive* social change that under 18's don't nod-and-a-wink drink in pubs anymore. Based on no evidence whatsoever, I'd say this was possibly a societal negative. (Not like that in my day, typing this from my park bench, etc)

The MCC arrive here tomorrow and their squad are flying in on four separate planes. Perhaps they have been taking decoy lessons from the orange faced one with Arctic interests.

Date night, and met up in Cambridge for an outdoor performance of Romeo and Juliet. My brilliant, but highly scientific -side-of-the-brain wife has just asked me what it's about.

In the 70s, there was a fad for iron-on t-shirts designs - branded images, or make-your-own kits with mixed images, letters, numbers, etc. A kid at my jnr school had a Goodies t-shirt that his mum had made with iron-on letters, but had spelled it Goodeys. He acquired the nickname Dim Brooke-Taylor.
