Today Microsoft moved all its GitHub copilot subscribers to token-based billing. If you want to see what happens when people have to pay the actual costs of AI, the day is finally here. It's obvious that every customer sees the deep, meaningful value and isn't angry at all.

Back when we were doing AI usage discussions in my organization we had the warning to treat AI as a "very eager intern." But interns learn from their mistakes, whereas an AI agent forgets its training without constant reminders.

Well the idea is that you're supposed to be doing the learning. Building a flotilla of skillset files and system prompt and agents and whatnot for each special purpose so you can keep its context uncluttered for each task.

Same reason machines to do anything else that can be done by hand: Humans are expensive. Coding is one a rare case where LLMAI is defensible, imho: - They're trained on freely available public code instead of stolen art, - they collaborate with devs more than replacing them, - code is autotestable.

Legally defensible perhaps, but not really ethically defensible. If these companies had come to me and said, “We want to train our LLMs on your open source projects so we can eventually put humans out of jobs,” I would have told them to go to hell. I write open source to help humans, not hurt them.

An interesting thread about the cost of AI when it’s no longer subsidised by the big tech firms. bsky.app/profile/edzi...

GH pricing change is mayhem for coders leveraging LLM, but it's only changing the values in the cost/benefit arithmetic, not the formula. FWIW I run a coding AI agent locally on my desktop PC at home. It's a complete nincompoop and drives the GPU fans like mad, but it's good at scaffolding.
