In today’s episode of #FixTheForms, @deevybee.bsky.social is fighting with ScholarOne in the hope that eventually it might be persuaded to allow her to accept her review of an academic paper. Note that she’s an eminent scholar giving up her time purely from the kindness of her heart.

Someone needs to set ScholarOne on fire. I try to submit a nicely formatted reviewer report with bold headings. This is turned into a single stream of continuous plain text. I insert html code. No change. I try to upload my review (17 kb) as a separate file. It's been uploading it now for 10 mins.

S1 is a piece of garbage. It’s a shame soooo many publishers are stuck with it / stuck to it. With the recent sale I can’t see many big changes coming any time soon.

It’s so much worse than you can imagine. 6m papers published a year and I would say half of all submitting authors and reviewers will be using a ~30 year old piece of software to contribute to publication. Yes that’s right. 30 years old. Three decades. Pre-broadband. Maybe pre-web.
