Hi @hidde.blog @duncanpetrie.com Here’s a typical post from @greenleejw.bsky.social, who mostly posts about eel history, eel facts, and the maps he draws for customers. Top tip: always worth reading his alt-txt which is great.

Surprised Eel Historian, PhD@greenleejw.bsky.social

In 1107, King Henry's butler founded the abbey of Wymondham, & he donated 2 things to help the monks get by: 1. the right to salvage shipwrecks on a nearby coast 2. a rent of 2,000 eels per year Time for an eel picnic on the beach! 🗃️🧪

Invitations for myself and husband to get RSV vaccinations. We are obedient patients so have booked, but it would have been nice to get slightly more (that is, any) information about what an RSV vaccination might help to protect us from. Not a link, not a word beyond the phrase “RSV vaccination”.

Did you know that there is an entire railway in the UK that’s been ready to start operations since 2024, but still is not working? It’s East-West Rail between Milton Keynes and Oxford. Also a mystery: almost no press coverage and no government announcements www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

theguardian.com‘People can see it – but can’t use it’: mystery of completed East-West Rail line that has no passenger trainsThe East West Rail project linking Oxford to Milton Keynes was finished in 2024. There’s just one hitch: no services

In today’s episode of #FixTheForms, @martinjordan.com discovers that @deutschebahn.com requires euros to have a comma as the decimal symbol, but the error message tells users to use a dot instead. Pro tip: get real people to test your error messages.

Martin Jordan@martinjordan.com

How to mess things up with your users, or another edition of #FixTheForms—this time with @deutschebahn.com. The form asks users to use a dot as the decimal symbol. When they do, it shows an error telling them to do it exactly like this. To progress, despite the error message, a comma is required.

Some lovely news to end and perk up a difficult #CarerLife week: safe arrival of the first baby in the family in the next generation so I’m now a great-aunt. Baby’s mum, dad (my nephew) and baby all doing well. Even better, my 91yr old aunt is now a great-great.

Forgot to post the actual robin by @juliaallum.bsky.social See the thread for link to buy a limited-edition screen print

Caroline Jarrett@cjforms.bsky.social

If you’d enjoy giving someone* this robin, snap it up quickly. @juliaallum.bsky.social only made 10 and 3 have sold to people on here already *buying presents for yourself also a good idea

I really love this robin. The screen print looks like an ideal Christmas present but act quickly - I just treated myself so there are only 9 (or perhaps fewer) left now.

I've just listed this robin screen print in my shop. Limited to just 10, you can get one here - juliaallum.co.uk/product/robi... #screenprint #handmade

Congratulations to the two awesome Belgian runners who decided to stop after creating a backyard ultra world record. Ivo Steyaert is 56. Merijn Geerts is 52. They have both run over 500 miles / 820km in 5 days. Congratulations also to the winning team: United States.

jaredbeasley.bsky.social@jaredbeasley.bsky.social

The Belgian duo has stopped. They completed 124 Yards. 124 hours of running. Ignored 124 chances to quit. A new World Record. 👏

On another difficult day (because #CarerLife), following this race is a great consolation. Out of nearly 1000 runners, two Belgian stalwarts continue to complete yards. 24 "yards" = 100 miles. They've each done 122 yards breaking the World Record, running every single hour for over 5 days now.

YARD 122 Two Belgian runners, Ivo Steyeart and Merijn Geerts, have broken the World Record in Backyard Ultra. The previous Record was 119, set by Australian Phil Gore. The Belgians continue to run.

This independent conference, Nov 13 in Brighton UK, is packed with interesting and varied speakers. Would definitely love to go myself but it’s not possible for me right now. Book that profession development day and snap up a ticket.

Jeremy Keith@adactio.com

This year’s FFConf is shaping up to be genuinely unmissable. So …um, you know …don’t miss it: https://2026.ffconf.org/ I’ll see you there! 🔗 https://adactio.com/notes/22807

Booking a blood test at our GP is straightforward now there’s the new online triage system. 1. Get a text from GP telling me phone them to book a blood test 2. Navigate my way through several layers of menu, plus being told at least 3 times to do it online (spoiler alert: you can’t do this online)

3. Get to the queue. I’m number 2 in the queue. 4. 22 minutes later, call is picked up. 5. Next available appointment is December 4th. I’m allowed to choose a convenient time. 6. I get a text confirmation. Simples!

Well done @timpaul.co.uk It’s not too late to find a fiver to throw into the donation pot - only a few of them needed to help Tim to get to his target

Tim Paul@timpaul.co.uk

Done! Massive thanks to everyone who donated and to @officeofwilson.com for playing hype-man! We raised over a grand in a day - a few more donations will push it to £1,500 - you know what to do 😜

Back at the hospital with poorly husband again waiting for a CT scan again. #CarerLife Hoping the outcome is “nothing new, just more changes from the stroke in March”.

Results of CT scan are “nothing new”; reassuring. No explanation of new “blotchy vision” problem. Can’t read text and some problems with seeing in general, but articulation problems make it hard to describe / diagnose. Now waiting for referral to weekdays-only eye clinic #CarerLife

Home. We agreed that today’s hospital trip (6.5hrs at hospital in total, 5hrs in the “day care unit”) was definitely less stressful than previous trips that have been wholly in A&E. Day unit quieter and more comfortable, maybe because early on Sunday. #CarerLife

If you’re looking for a lovely 2027 calendar, what about this one from @juliaallum.bsky.social? (We have a commitment to receiving the family photo calendar from a cousin - just the 15 year tradition now - but I’m sorely tempted)

Julia Allum@juliaallum.bsky.social

Giving this another plug... My 2027 calendar, UK Landmarks is now available to preorder from my website - juliaallum.co.uk/product/2027...

I just discovered the #BloomScrolling tag and I’m delighted. Here’s my first entry, first successful attempt at growing a dahlia. No idea which one and no idea what happened to the others that went in.

Unusual request today: please consider registering as a bone marrow donor. I had exactly the same blood cancer as in this article, acute myeloid leukaemia. Was very lucky that my brother was a match but many people must rely on the kindness of strangers. More here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

bbc.co.ukMother with cancer urges people to join stem cell registerNikola Dolphin-Rowland was diagnosed with cancer 28 years to the day she learned her son had leukaemia.

Most people never get asked to donate. If you are a match, 90% of donations are by temporary blood donation: they borrow your blood to take stem cells out and return the rest.

If you’ve ever thought of drinking raw milk before boiling it, maybe read this article. I learned that drinking raw milk unboiled is bad from @sarahtaber.bsky.social Tl;dr it’s fine so long as you’re ok with a mix of milk and poop (Cheese made from raw milk is a completely different thing).

Will Weldon@oldmanweldon.bsky.social

Great story about how the state has given up on doing anything about cranks selling their bacteria filled dairy products (ha ha that photo obviously did a number on me woooooooo) www.propublica.org/article/cali...

In today’s episode of #FixTheForms, @martinjordan.com encounters the older person’s nemesis: the calendar picker that forces folks like me to click back through a billion months. Luckily Martin is much younger 😊

Martin Jordan@martinjordan.com

Yet another government form that needs fixing: Applying for a Malaysia digital arrival card makes the user navigate another calendar to enter the date of birth. Also, the form doesn’t allow copy-pasting, making it difficult for users with dyslexia or dyscalculia.

Fully agree that forcing those of us with dyscalculia (me) or dyslexia to re-type long numbers such as passport numbers is another nightmare. Pro tips: - let people type in their date of birth - let them copy-paste wherever they want to

Really excited to be going to my first WebDevConf where I’m doing a lightning talk about forms Please come

Luke Murphy@lurkmoophy.bsky.social

We're only a handful of tickets to making it bigger than last year (which was our biggest year since I can't remember when). BUY BUY BUY

Well, yes; I blogged about how this company failed my sniff test back in *2019* after they showed up at a startup pitching event run by, & their product was duly effusively praised by ... the civilian who at the time was known as Prince Andrew. Do I know how to spot them or what.

Caroline Jarrett@cjforms.bsky.social

I think @heatherburnstech.bsky.social might have some things to say about this (although she’s probably already seen it). And “I told you so” might be one of them. Tl;dr “Child safety” tech that definitely doesn’t do what it claims to do. At all.

David Quammen's essay in The New York Times today closes with this paragraph. It's both a scientific falsehood, and an incredibly dangerous narrative. If you're willing to give me five minutes of your time, I'd like to explain why.
