The Center for Scientific Integrity is proud to announce the inaugural winners of the 2026 Ctrl-Z Award. Named for the universal keyboard shortcut for “undo,” the Ctrl-Z Award this year honors @cetaceanneeded.bsky.social and @katelaskowski.bsky.social for choosing transparency over reputation.

I was going to say, Control-Z puts a process to sleep, COMMAND-Z does an undo. For a very long time, undo was seen as intractable. Of course, Control-C kills a process, and the British pronounce Z "zed" so I got into some trouble when I tried to help people @edinburgh-uni.bsky.social back in 1991.

I dimly recall that ctrl/Z followed by "bg" sends a foreground process to the background in at least some U*x flavours and/or shells.
