thread. correct numbers and data backing them come later, but this is the thrust.

One thing I learned last week was that if you don’t count the BS market capitalisation bubble of 7 “AI” firms, the US economy as measured by the s&p 500 didn’t go up 13% last year; it went down 7%. The EU may be a larger economy already. We need to get our own O2 mask on, then start helping others.

First of a thread of eight, precising a @lemonde.fr article reminding us that many Israelis are fighting for a return of democracy, rule of law, and compassion. Best wishes to them on this, their election day!

Joanna Bryson, blathering@j2bryson.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy

Because Israel does not allow citizens to vote remotely, including at embassies, many expatriates have flown home to vote. Turnout appears particularly high among opponents of Benjamin Netanyahu, who have traveled from New York, Washington, Paris, London, Madrid and even Australia […]

Knowing Israelis have to fly to vote makes me a little happier about 75€ to get my ballot back on time (it arrived last week , post takes 5 weeks now). But you can’t be very happy about all kinds of disenfranchising efforts.

Post 6 (of 8) from that thread was the one most relevant to #AIEthics and #DigitalGovernance, in my professional opinion. Why exactly did Israel rely on a system of machine vision surveillance, disregarding the intelligence of their own Field Observers? (תצפיתניות says gemini when I check the term.)

Above all, what they cannot forgive is the prime minister's stubborn refusal to establish a state commission of inquiry into the security failures of October 7. "For three years, we protested for the release of the hostages, even in front of the White House," said Mirit Hemy, who had come from […]

A major factor in Rome adopting Christianity was that women ran household decisions/budgets there (like Japan now) including choice of religion, and they liked one dedicated to public goods for women and orphans. Apparently we learn this from Constantine’s letters to his favourite pagan priests.

The EU's Cyber Resilience Act (Regulation 2024/2847) is the first EU-wide law imposing binding product security requirements on software and connected hardware, regardless of where the manufacturer is based.

I was astounded when, for the first time, I saw a speaker do this — use math to communicate, not just to signal. Flasbulb moment: 8th floor playroom, tech square. Vast minority of speakers really do this. Never seen it in a paper!

Interesting looking paper on what you can and can't identify from staggered adoption panel data. Also, I move that all important equations get subtitles:

@support.bsky.team congrats on getting your search to be really outstanding; if a term is unique I can find it from years ago. But what I still can't do here that I could on twitter is put in the handles of the people who were discussing a term, for when a term is not that uniq but conversation is?

Russ Salakhutdinov and I were both at our first #COLM2026, so I asked him what he made of it. It reminded him of NeurIPS ten years ago, when you could get through all the posters! And he had good advice for early-career researchers. youtu.be/YrmhHUqfVlY?... #WiAIR ##wiairpodcast

Good news of the day🎆

For two years, student-led protests have raged against Aleksandar Vučić and his corrupt government in Serbia. Today, in parliamentary elections, he was toppled. One of the most sustained protest movements in recent European history has succeeded. Resistance works.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

I wonder how much they used AI for planning and logistics?

Adam Schwarz@adamjschwarz.bsky.social

The Student List had no party machinery. It operated through university assemblies, protests and hiking between cities & towns. They had 2% of national TV political advertising airtime vs 93% for Vučić. This is one of the most remarkable grassroots democratic victories in modern European history.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin ordered a nationwide two-hour extension of voting in today’s presidential runoff, moving the close of polls from 5pm to 7 pm Brasília time.

True, but a friend's partner was just hospitalised in ICU by a cyclist running a red light. Everyone needs to be careful, no one should run red lights at speed. A few years ago I crashed into another cyclist who turned left illegally right in front of me shortly after we'd both run a yellow light.

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

“Cyclists are often perceived as recklessly flaunting road laws. A new study challenges this perception. The study found only 5% of cyclists broke road rules while riding on bike infrastructure versus 66% of motorists who broke rules while driving.” Safe bike infrastructure fuels rule-following.

A colleague stepped out of #cyborgWorkers for a Google talk to the EP. Google said Europe was falling behind because it wasn't using AI and this was because women are afraid of AI. This is truly evil – even the "falling behind" part is false! A reminder of our new data (short thread) #AIEthics

Gary King (for those who don't know) has done as much for quality social science as anyone. I do think reviewing is a plausible task for doing with AI, as well as #marking. But as much as marking/evaluation is truly the main academic task I'd retire to avoid, I've learnt so much by it & reviewing.
