the thing with Clarence Thomas is that he is a true believer the bribes are not to get him to rule the way they want; he will do that regardless the bribes are so he doesn’t retire and cash in elsewhere so he can live the lifestyle he wants - now he can live it and stay on the court

there’s more to it. part of what this crowd provides is an entire social world, and with it esteem and celebration. they are given awards and applause for their terrible decisions. that is as important, if not more, than the money.

yeah, the entire Federalist Society project exists to provide a comfortable cocoon within which these people will be feted for their loyalty and rewarded for it both materially and socially they have no interest in one of their nominees ever pulling a Souter again
