When Vetinari wants to wind Vimes up, he's His Grace Commander Sir Samuel Vimes, Duke of Ankh. But here he's not talking about that guy, he's talking about Sam Vimes. Still not necessarily *the actual* Sam Vimes, but the legend of Sam Vimes.

Reading this just triggered a wave of grief for Terry. 😢 Why was such a treasure taken so early when it seems like the bastards he railed against hang on forever?

I believe Vetinari is referring to the one that Vimes drowned during the chase - the werewolf came back, but if they weren't ONLY killable with fire and/or silver, it would have stuck.

this is such a perfect encapsulation of the Vimes/Vetinari dynamic Vimes is deeply distrustful of his own mythology, because he knows what he is deep down, even if he underestimates himself and Vetinari views that mythology as a tool, like any other, to be used for the greater good

I'm sorry I can't contribute more to this...but "carries the law with him like a lamp" is so powerful, and is such a wonderful way for Vetinari to compliment, in his own way, Vimes and his beliefs.

Vetinari could be another Vimes/Weatherwax - knows who & what he is, is naturally and profoundly suspicious, and has a strong sense of duty that guides him toward the greater good, if sometimes in a roundabout way. This seems to be Terry's idea of what to do if you're clever and have power.
