if the moderate wing of the Dem party would spend even half of the energy they are spending fighting the DSA on fighting Trump they wouldn't be losing so many primaries to the DSA

"We are preparing for the next war that is coming": Abdul El-Sayed's victory in Michigan and the rise of DSA candidates in multiple states have Democrats at odds with each other over the identity and future of the party. @shanegoldmacher.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2026/08/06/u...

literally this is their problem, it's not that voters are all of a sudden significantly more progressive it's that they are incandescently angry at what this administration has been doing and they are looking for someone who will punch them in the mouth DSA candidates are promising to do so

it's honestly fascinating because "I will work across the aisle for common sense" actually was a selling point in primaries for a while there! evelyn normielib has been, historically, much more interested in the concept of bipartisanship but under trump this has reversed and now they're scrambling

I do think the guys who spent decades saying we have to work with Republicans on everything have an uphill battle on saying they will fight now. It is less of an uphill battle than trying to convince people that working with Republicans is the move in the present day.

the good news is I actually think this divide is fairly overblown at this point - there is an incandescently mad donor class who is freaking out but most of the moderate Dem politicians are willing to get on board at this point, as you can see from how fast the establishment lined up behind El-Sayed

Unfortunately, many moderates are posting through it rather than figuring out some way to fight back. It is a bad look to post about the bad things happening and the rest of us going..

agree with pretty much all of this. to extent progs are winning purple primaries this is a "war" agst yr own voters. far more effective than this "war" is getting more policy-mainstream Dems into the "fight" lane where they speak a language that seems relevant to what voters are seeing.

Candidates who treat the concept of acting in a "bipartisan" manner as anything other than worthy of derision and scorn are automatically disqualified and unfit for the moment. I want to see Dems promise beat the living shit out of Republicans. Politically ofc. Probably not literally. But...

Biden's approach of waiting for the fever to break, reaching across the aisle, delivering for red areas to assuage their extremism? A total and comprehensive (and foreseeable!) failure. The fever has only risen. They bit that outstretched hand. Time to put the GOP down like the rabid dog it is.

At some point I think even the donor class will change their tune, they just have to go through all the stages of grief that their “moderates are the adults in the room, go along to get along” attitude towards the Republicans has been wrong for years and is now widely understood to be wrong.

End of the day, Democratic Socialists aren’t nearly as hostile to the donor-class types as they think they are, and at some point the donors will figure that out.

Agree and I would also say, it’s clear that not all folks voting for so called democratic socialists in these primaries agrees with everything they claim to stand for; I would wager that almost none of the people who voted for Chevalier want to abolish prisons or police. They are seeking fighters.

Kinda worried about the media. Every other Atlantic headline at this point. The war with the NYT was an enormous factor in bringing down Biden. The death of any semblance of a "liberal media" has been a crippling blow to the Democratic party, and it's on full display right now.

I think this point was illustrated 9 years ago when Gillibrand decided to go on a crusade against Franken and ultimately succeed and getting him to resign. One could argue about the nobility of this but she absolutely destroyed any future political ambition with this move.

Yep, I genuinely think the thing that is that these primaries are actually competitive and that means that yes they will get divisive...but there has been very few where it feels like afterwards there is anger at the winner, the closest is probably Mamdani?
