Just came out of the new Sense & Sensibility directed by Georgia Oakley. I have so many good things to say. Firstly, wow, refreshingly slow pacing. In a good way. Like... long, lingering shots of people chilling out, or yearning. Many, many gorgeous shots exploring the east English countryside.

Cramped shots with many subjects in the foreground and background. Candlelit scenes and low light scenes were perfect. This is a FILM film. Oakley has an advanced eye, I'm glad I saw this on the big screen. On a technical level is is one of the greatest period dramas ever shot.

You could tell it was shot entirely on film. It is especially hard to get low light, and candlelight, right on film, but she didn't compromise for it. She nailed it, it is absolutely masterful and a treat to the eyes. They do NOT make enough films that look like this.

The main cast is very charismatic and their chemistry is strong. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esme Creed-Miles were the obvious standouts but George Mackay deserves some regard for being so likeable despite missing for huge, huge parts of the film (as per the book's plot) and having such a difficult part.

There's one actor who is miscast and their atonal presence took me out of the movie. What's worse is that character is barely in the film so you never really get a read on him, and there are a few flanderizations in the movie like it too, though some I enjoyed, even if I accept them begrudgingly.

The soundtrack by Roger Goula is maybe one of the best period film scores I've ever heard, up there with Pride & Prejudice (2005). The entire movie builds up to the old (but good) cliche of "girl runs after boy to confess her feelings" and it is scored so soaringly, so earnestly. LOVED it.

I don't understand why this of all films has been such a victim of "person complains about dumb tagline on poster, gets 10,000 likes" but alas, people will characterise every adaptation as the worst ever, no matter what. Yes, all the taglines have been dumb. Ignore them. They're not in the movie.
