This is another piece by a faculty member on "administrative bloat." The data in recent years: staff employment has declined relative to faculty employment, although my research suggests that lower-level staff take the brunt of the cuts. www.chronicle.com/article/dont...

Individual campus experiences may vary considerably from that overall pattern & thus may shape what people write. At my own campus, over the past decade, non-faculty staff declined by about 2% (with variation by type), full-time faculty declined by 20%, & upper management employees increased by 51%.

I have found the categorization of “administration” is very problematic. Most of the administration faculty rail against hold academic appointments (many assistant and associate deans). Others are tied to student support. What about research staff? I would hope the scrutiny would be systematic.

student affairs as a profession only became a thing because faculty did not want to do student affairs things! how often we forget our institutional histories :)
