This is an absolutely riveting--and depressing--story. It's well worth your time to read.

Mamon Saleh had two suitcases packed for college. He had earned a full scholarship to Penn, and later one to a university in Hong Kong. But visa denials kept him in Latakia, Syria. He's one of the many students who are rich in aspirations and stuck in limbo. https://chroni.cl/4ia9B5S

The article is rightly more nuanced than this post. The main driver of that headline figure is housing. Yes tuition is a challenge, but it’s not what has pushed cost of attendance over $50k.

The soaring costs of public universities is a political decision. When these schools predominantly served white students, they tended to be free (UC, CCNY, etc.) But as the number of students of color has increased, funding for the public universities has decreased. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...

Minnesota, South Carolina, and UCF all rushed the field within an hour of each other this evening. Although I worry about safety, it's also a unique part of college football.

Texas football may have used AI to call a doomed fourth down play in last Saturday's loss to Florida that dropped it near the bottom of the SEC standings. Machine learning has its pros and cons in this area, but it's probably better than having Richard Nixon call plays.

It's annoying to be a reviewer, and suspect you are reading something an AI author has written, or to be an author and suspect you are reading what an AI reviewer has written. A system where humans volunteer time to engage with AI products is not going to last.

How much are power-conference teams paying their 🏀 rosters in 2026? We spent a month talking to 100-plus sources, and we didn't rely on just the coaches for this info. ADs, GMs and even third-party consultants, too. All 80 high-major programs split into seven spending tiers. A CBS Sports exclusive:

My latest @nbcnews.com investigation dropped this morning -- We analyzed the YouTube watch histories of 11 students to look into how some students end up viewing over 5,000 YouTube videos in class, on school-issued laptops, in a single school year www.nbcnews.com/specials/hoo...

Working on a thing about higher education and the midterms, so I'm looking at some candidate platforms. @abdulelsayed.bsky.social is a jumbled to point of being nonsense. If you win Abdul, I'm right here. Send your people to talk.

Yet another example of why land-grant universities are awesome.

Average hourly earnings, adjusted for inflation, fell 0.5 percent in September and are now back to where they were in January, 2025. That means that Americans, on average, have experienced zero real wage growth since Trump returned to office.

The Justice Department is threatening an antitrust lawsuit against the American Bar Association (which ED is trying to derecognize as an accreditor) over its requirement that most first-year law school classes be taught by full-time faculty. The handling attorney at DOJ is an adjunct at Catholic.

There appears to be a trend of more colleges cutting staff and administrative positions in recent years. While faculty unions and conservative reformers celebrate, the implications for students aren't quite as clear. I appreciate the shout-out to my recent research in this piece.
